Just Before Losing Everything is a wonderful short film by French director Xavier Legrand. At just over 30 minutes long, the film establishes a close relationship with its protagonist and her children, and we find ourselves caught in her own situation. The film has an intensity unlike any other and moves quickly, although only follows the course of one day. An academy award nominee for best live action short, this film definitely merits a win. The character backstory provides the perfect amount of information for its audience, and although the film can raise some questions, Legrand keeps the film highly intelligent for a highly intelligent viewer. In all, the twists and turns keep one thinking on this ultimate roller coaster ride of a film, right up to the credits.
